12 Jul Yiramalay 2018
Today, as part of our NAIDOC celebrations we release our interview with June Oscar AO, the first female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner.
I was incredibly honoured to interview June talking about the importance of language and culture as “enriching our lives like nothing else can” for our latest Yiramalay film we share today. Yiramalay is one of our pro bono projects that we gain so much knowledge and joy from.
In this film, Bunuba Traditional Owner Kaylene Marr talks about her role as Senior Mentor at the school and her approach to teaching teenagers encouraging them to “look, listen and feel” and to “turn the page over to start something fresh.”
The Yiramalay school aims to develop cultural understanding and a capacity to relate to others, as well as supporting and enhancing community cohesion. The partnership began in 2004 between the Bunuba people of the Fitzroy Valley, Yiramalay, and Wesley College in Melbourne. The relationship is centred around a deep commitment to learning together, expanding horizons and future opportunities for the children and families of both communities.
We love our involvement helping this school spread these important messages far and wide.
